HKIA spans an area of 2.6 million square meters, making it one of the world's largest man-made structures. It has two parallel runways running east to west that can be used simultaneously for aircraft landings, and a third runway that runs north to south or alternatively east to west that can be used by smaller aircraft such as helicopters or business jets.

The airport has two terminals that can accommodate 40 million passengers annually. Terminal 2 serves international flights, while Terminal 1 serves domestic flights and some international arrivals. A single-use passenger terminal has been created which connects both terminals.

In 2017, it handled 75 million passengers and 240 thousand aircraft movements, making it one of the busiest airports in the world by passenger and cargo traffic volume.
